Who is Pilates for?
Pilates is an exercise method that is suitable for people of all ages and ability and all stages of fitness. Whether you are young or in your golden years, Pilates is a system that can adapt through all the stages of your life.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a unique exercise system that is performed on a mat or on specialised appartus designed to improve flexibility, strength and stability in the body. Originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, Pilates emphasises proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance. It focuses on mind-body connection and teaches you how to move your body correctly, which is why it is helpful in the rehabilitation of injury and can improve performance in sport.
What is a Reformer?
The Reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment which is a sliding carriage with springs of varying resistance, ropes and pulleys. Like other styles of Pilates, reformer is a phenomenal workout for your body’s “powerhouse”, your core, back, hips and glutes. It is heavily focused on alignment and accurate muscle engagement, which can lead to improved posture, better balance and more stability, especially when in motion.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Pilates can help with your general fitness, movement, keeping you flexible and improving your general well being.
Pilates will also:
- Provide relief from back pain
- Improve alignment and posture
- Improve core strength
- Provide stability and balance in the body
- Improve overall strength
- Improve mind and body awareness
- Improve breathing
- Improve neurological conditions
What is Mat Pilates?
A Mat class uses only a mat and maybe small equipment such as balls, foam rollers, Magic Circles and stretchy bands. Mat is a great place to start your Pilates journey as you learn the fundamental principles and build a strong foundation to your practice.
What is Mixed Equipment?
Joseph Pilates developed a range of apparatus to assist his clients return to health from the 1920’s. The range of apparatus provides versatility allowing exercises for all levels of movement to improve and challenge strength, flexibility and balance.
At Intune our range of Pilates Equipment includes the following original designed apparatus:
- Trapeze Table
- Reformer
- Wunda Chair
- Ladder Barrel
- Spine Corrector
- Ped-O Pole
Can I do Reformer if I’ve never done Pilates before?
We encourage you to start with Mat Pilates to learn the fundamental principles without over complicating things with a moving carriage. However, our Reformer Level 1 class is suitable for beginners through to anyone who likes a deeper connection at a slightly slower pace.
Is Reformer Pilates more challenging than Mat?
It is a common misconception that Reformer Pilates is more challenging than mat. The resistance created by the springs on a reformer can provide a more challenging strength and endurance workout than mat classes. However, on the mat, your body weight provides resistance against gravity and the exercises require you to be in full control of your body, rather than relying on assistance or support from the springs on the reformer. Small equipment like resistance bands and hand weights are used to make the exercises more challenging.
